Agricultural Heritage

Generations of Farming Expertise

Agriculture is deeply rooted in the history of the Brokenhead region, with many farms dating back to the original European settlers—and still owned by the same families today.

At a glance (2021 Agriculture Census):

  • 2,700 farms in the region
  • 41% of crops are grains:
  • 29% wheat (Hard Red Spring wheat is the dominant crop)
  • 25% oats
  • 5% other grains (barley, flax, soybeans, corn, sunflower)
  • ~670 cattle farms
  • Predominantly clay soil with areas of sand/loam

Local producers are well-versed in no-till and tillage practices, and they grow wheat varieties suited to local climate and market demands. Wheat straw is mostly chopped and returned to the soil for nutrient retention and stability—part of a broader commitment to sustainable practices.

Planning for the Future

The RM of Brokenhead is actively pursuing biodiversity and sustainable growth through initiatives like its Climate Action Plan. By encouraging agricultural diversity and environmentally responsible practices, the region aims to support long-term ecological health and community resilience.
